Step 1 — Measure

How to Measure Your Foot Size

An accurate foot measurement is the most reliable starting point — especially for online purchases or international brands where your labeled size may differ from your actual fit.

  1. 1

    Gather materials

You need a piece of paper larger than your foot, a pencil, and a ruler or tape measure marked in centimeters. Measure in the afternoon: feet swell slightly during the day and are largest then.

  2. 2

    Trace your foot

Place the paper on a hard floor. Stand on it with your full weight (sitting changes foot shape). Trace around your foot with the pencil held vertically. If you cannot reach, ask someone to trace for you.

  3. 3

    Measure foot length

Draw a straight line from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe (usually the big toe or second toe). Measure this line in centimeters — this is your bare foot length. Repeat for both feet and use the larger measurement.

  4. 4

    Enter and convert

Enter the centimeter value in the 'Foot cm' input above, or use your known US/UK/EU size. All 9 international standards appear instantly. For the brand you're buying from, check their specific size chart — this converter uses the most common standard offsets, but individual brands may vary by ±0.5.

Understanding Shoe Sizes: Standards & Accuracy

The physical anchor for all shoe sizing is foot length in millimeters (Mondopoint). Every shoe sizing system — US, UK, EU, JP, KR, CN, MX, BR — is ultimately derived from this single measurement, though each system expresses it differently and adds different amounts of allowance for the shoe interior.

The EU (Paris point) system is the most mathematically transparent: EU size = (foot length mm + 26.67) ÷ 6.67, where the 26.67 mm accounts for approximately 2 EU sizes of shoe allowance. For example, a foot length of 273 mm gives EU = (273 + 26.67) ÷ 6.67 ≈ 44.9, rounded down to EU 44 for men's sizes. This rounding — always toward the lower whole number — is the source of the ±0.5 EU uncertainty you see in conversion tables. Different retailers apply different rounding conventions, which is why the same foot can legitimately produce EU 41 or EU 41.5 depending on the brand.

US and UK sizes use the barleycorn system (1 barleycorn = 8.47 mm, one-third of an inch). US men's sizes start at a different baseline than UK: US men = UK + 1. US women's sizes add another step: US women = UK + 2 = US men + 1 (ISO standard) or US men + 1.5 (Nike/most athletic brands) or US men + 2 (Converse). This is not a data error — it reflects genuine brand-level policy differences. This converter defaults to the Nike/athletic standard (+1.5) because it covers the majority of athletic footwear, but you can change the offset using the brand selector.

Japan (JP) and the Mondopoint systems (CN, KR) directly express foot length: JP in centimeters, CN and KR in millimeters. This makes them the most literal — JP 28 means a 28 cm (280 mm) foot. The CM column in this converter uses the same value as JP. The KR column uses millimeters rounded to the nearest 5 mm.

Brazilian sizes (BR) follow a simple rule from Wikipedia: BR = EU − 2, or equivalently BR = 1.5 × foot length in cm. This makes them predictable from EU. Mexico (MX) primarily uses foot length in centimeters, similar to JP.

The CM column represents bare foot length. However, most brand-labeled CM sizes on the shoe tongue include ~5–8 mm of last allowance (楦腔 in Chinese), making them 0.5–1 cm larger than bare foot. If a brand lists CM 27, your bare foot is likely around 26–26.5 cm. This converter always uses bare foot length as the reference — enter your actual foot measurement, not the number on your shoe.

Kids' sizes form an entirely separate system that does not connect to adult sizes. US kids' C sizes (2C–13C) restart at 1Y for big kids. European kids' sizes at EU 17–39 overlap partially with adult sizes but are sized with ~8% more allowance (versus ~5% for adults). Never convert kids' sizes using adult formulas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my shoe size at home?
Trace your foot on paper while standing with full weight. Draw a line from heel to longest toe and measure in centimeters. Do this in the afternoon when feet are at their largest. Use the 'Foot cm' input in the converter above — it maps directly to all 9 international standards. Measure both feet and use the larger measurement. If you fall between two sizes, size up for comfort.
How do I convert men's shoe size to women's?
The standard rule is to add 1–2 sizes depending on the brand. Nike and most athletic brands: add 1.5 (e.g., men's US 10 = women's US 11.5). Adidas: add 1. Converse: add 2. This converter shows the equivalent women's size automatically under 'Women's equivalent' once you enter a men's size. You can change the offset using the brand selector for the brand you're buying from.
What is the difference between EU shoe sizes and US?
EU sizes use the Paris point system: EU = (foot length mm + 26.67) ÷ 6.67. US sizes use the barleycorn system (1/3 inch per size). As a result, the gap between EU and US varies: a men's US 8 corresponds to EU 41 (some sources: 41.5), US 10 → EU 44, US 12 → EU 46. There is a ±0.5 EU uncertainty across brands because they round differently. The converter uses the most common whole-number EU values and labels each with '±0.5 EU possible.'
What does EU size 21 mean for kids?
EU 21 in kids' sizing corresponds to approximately US 5C (toddler, foot ~12.3–12.7 cm). Note: '21' in Chinese old-style sizing (CN 21) means something completely different — a foot around 155 mm, which is US 8.5C in kids'. This converter uses EU numbering for the EU column. If a product says '21码' without specifying the system, confirm whether it means EU or old-style Chinese sizing.
How accurate is shoe size conversion?
Men's and women's US/UK/EU conversions are verified across 4+ independent sources and are reliable within ±0.5 EU or ±0.5 US. The main sources of variation are: (1) EU rounding — different retailers round to the nearest whole or half EU size, creating ±0.5 uncertainty; (2) men↔women offset — varies by brand (Nike +1.5, adidas +1, Converse +2); (3) CM column — most brand CM labels include 5–8 mm of last allowance on top of bare foot length. Kids' JP/MX/CN data is from a single source; KR is derived from Mondopoint; BR kids has no specialized source. These are flagged in the converter.
What is Mondopoint shoe size?
Mondopoint (ISO 9407:2019) is the most literal shoe sizing system: size = bare foot length in mm (with foot width as a secondary dimension). Japan (JIS S5037), China (GB/T 3293), and Korea (KS M6681) all use the Mondopoint standard, which means JP 28 (28 cm), CN 280, and KR 280 all correspond to the same foot length of approximately 280 mm. Japan typically displays the value in centimeters; China and Korea in millimeters. This makes these three systems the easiest to convert between — they're essentially the same measurement in different units.
