What is a kilogram?

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. Since 20 May 2019 it has been defined by fixing the Planck constant at exactly 6.626 070 15 × 10⁻³⁴ joule-seconds, so it no longer depends on a single physical object.

The definition it replaced, in force since 1889, was the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram. The pound is fixed relative to the kilogram (0.453 592 37 kg), so 1 kg = 2.204 622 62… lb.
