How the Calculation Works
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the formula for calculating the needed final grade?
- Final needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. All percentages are expressed as decimals in the formula (e.g., 30% = 0.30).
- What if the result is over 100%?
- That means your target grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade and the final's weight. Consider adjusting your target or looking into extra credit opportunities.
- Can I use this with a letter grade scale instead of percentages?
- Convert your letter grade to a percentage first (e.g., A = 93%, B = 83%), then use this calculator. Use our GPA Calculator to convert GPA to letter grades.
- What if my professor curves grades?
- This calculator uses exact percentages. If your professor curves, your actual needed score may be lower than shown. Check with your instructor for curve policies.
