How GPA is Calculated
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a GPA?
- GPA (Grade Point Average) is a numeric summary of your academic performance, calculated by converting letter grades to points and averaging them weighted by credit hours.
- What is a weighted GPA?
- A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder courses (AP, Honors, IB). In a weighted 5.0 system, an A in an AP course counts as 5.0, while an A in a standard course counts as 4.0.
- What is the difference between 4.0 and 4.3 scales?
- On the US 4.0 scale, A+ is capped at 4.0. The 4.3 scale (used in South Korea at SNU, Yonsei, etc.) awards A+ = 4.3. Taiwan uses a 4.3 scale at NTU; some schools use 4.0. Japan uses a 4.0 scale with S/A/B/C/F grades.
- How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
- Select Cumulative GPA mode, enter your current GPA and total credit hours earned, then add your new courses. The calculator combines them: (currentGPA × currentCredits + newGradePoints) ÷ (currentCredits + newCredits).
- What GPA do I need to improve my overall GPA?
- Use the Cumulative GPA mode to experiment. Change the grades on new courses to see what semester GPA would raise your cumulative GPA to a target value.
