What is a meter?

The meter is the SI base unit of length. It is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299 792 458 of a second; that light-based definition dates from 1983, and the SI revision in force since 20 May 2019 restates it by treating the speed of light as an exact constant.

Feet are tied to the meter through the 1959 yard of 0.9144 m, which makes one foot 0.3048 m. Going the other way, a meter is 1/0.3048 = 3.280 839 895… feet, a decimal that never ends.
